First One-day Conference of Informing & Social Awareness on Disability

PEK/AmeA's "First One-day Conference of Informing & Social Awareness on Disability", constituted a turning point, in terms of activities, during the longterm  operation of the Centre. It was a stepping stone for further action, regarding our main objective, which is no other than the Socialization and the Smooth Intergration of Adults with Mental Disabilities, in the society.

We already dreaming of our Second One-day Conference!
We hope to find supporters and renew our date ... for December 2012!



We gathered some of the highlights of the day, which took place in the 2nd of December 2010 in "Apollon" Multiplex...








Workshop : In parallel with the One-day Conference, in a nearby hall, students from Primary, Secondary and High Schools co-operated with our Centre's trainees, creating unique constructions-collages. The creations were pined-up in the space where the event took place.



 First part : The lecturers gave a speech on their beliefs about Disabillity, driven by the 3rd of December (International Day of Disability). The panel included representatives of : POSGAmeA, NCDP, the Association of Blind People, the Community of Deaf People and also a lecturer with physical disabilities.




Second Part :  The "diversity" through the eyes of students from Secondary Schools and High Schools. The students read their own essays...




Third Part The scientific staff of PEK/AmeA presented the work of the Centre 
(activities, programs etc).

The Profile of PEK/AmeA

Few words about Us...


   The Association of Parents, Guardians and Friends of People with Disabilities of Piraeus, was founded in 1996, driven by the will to meet the needs of disabled people in the wider region of Piraeus. For this purpose we have established, and operated since 1997, a Centre of Day Care and Creative Activities (Educational Centre for People with Disabilities in Peiraeus-PEK/AmeA), where young men and women, up to  15 years of age, with Mental Retardation are cared. The Centre in housed in a rented building at 27 Aharnon & Dodekanisou St., Kaminia, Peiraeus.


   Our objective, through the creative activites and socializing programs, is the smooth intergration and acceptance of disabled adults in the local community and society, in general. Our aim is also their entertainment, the increase of their autonomy and companionship, the boost of their self esteem and parity. 


   Our dream is our Centre to be accomodated in privately owned premises, suitable for the needs of disabled people. Is also, the better implementation of our current programs and the future establishment and opperation of a modern guest house, for the best application of the Independent Living program for the people with disabilities of our Association, when the family can not or does not exist to provide the lifelong protection they need.






Our programs...


   In our centre, daily, 22 (twenty-two) adults with Mental Retardation, are occupied.
   The existing programs are:

  • Special Education
  • Learning Support
  • Psychological and Psychiatric Support
  • Special Physical Education
  • Dance Therapy (occasionally)
  • Workshops of Soap and Candles making, Stained Glass and Handmade Constructions
  • Parental Guidance
  • Cultural-Social Activities
  • Self Service - Autonomy Programs
  • Entertainment - External Programs (trips, visitis to museums, etc.)
  • Social Service
   The scientific staff of the Centre is consisted of specialized associates of various specialities (Phycologist, Special Educator, Social Worker, Professor of Physical Education, etc.) and is supervised by the Scientific Director of the Centre.
